22. October at 2 p.m.

WELCOME!

We kindly invite you to a lecture by Dr. Tomonori Ishioka, entitled Interpretive labor: a sociological concept to observe Japonese society differently”, which will take place as part of Tuesday Meetings on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, at 2 p.m. in the library of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana.

Professor Ishioka will discuss the reasons why many employees in Japan experience burnout. This is not due to physical exertion or excessive demands, but rather to the constant need to “interpret” – to constantly adapt and understand the changing moods and emotional responses of superiors and customers.

It is a phenomenon that reflects the specific nature of Japanese society: a strong group orientation. This characteristic often leads to psychological strain, exhaustion and other mental health problems among workers.

The lecture will be held in English.

Tomonori Ishioka is an associate professor at the Faculty of Sociology, Nihon University. He studied sociology at the University of Tsukuba, where he received his doctorate with a dissertation on ethnographic research on unnamed Filipino boxers in Manila, Philippines. His scientific articles have been published in journals in the fields of sociology, social research, physical education, and urban and cultural studies.
