We kindly invite you to a lecture by Dr Izabela Grabowska and Dr Magdalena Kocejko, entitled “(In)visible costs of domestic violence in CEEC- a case of countries with low data availability, which will take place as part of Tuesday Meetings on Wednesday, 26 November 2025, at 11.00 am in the library of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana.

Domestic violence generates wide-ranging social and economic costs,

including those of services to treat and support abused women and bring perpetrators to justice, aside from lost employment and productivity, undermining women’s capabilities, and even slowing down economic growth (WHO, 2024).

Although several approaches to estimating these costs have already been developed, most existing research and analyses focus on Anglo-Saxon or the Global South. Consequently, they tend to overlook the specific challenges and experiences of CEECs — particularly those related to the limited availability of register data.

Using the case of Poland, Dr Grabowska and Dr Kocejko will present the process and key assumptions behind developing a methodology for calculating the costs of domestic violence in data-scarce contexts. Thei ultimate goal is to contribute to the creation of a broader and more universal framework applicable across Central and Eastern European countries.
