In the Los Angeles Times article “Inside Israel’s AI Targeting System: How Data From a Phone Become a Death Sentence”, which examines the consequences of automated decision-making in armed conflicts, Dr. Vasja Badalič warns that AI systems that combine data from mobile phones, cameras, social media, and other sources to identify suspected combatants are not always reliable.
When assessing who may be a combatant, these systems often rely on patterns of everyday communication and movement. As a result, civilians may be misidentified because their metadata resembles that of legitimate military targets.
