Slovenia – USA: Democratizing Knowledge: Fostering Global Cooperation through Criminological Research between Slovenia and the USA
ABOUT THE PROJECT
For this project, the heads of the bilateral cooperation and their teams in Slovenia and the United States of America (USA) will draw on their previous collaborations and experiences in doing criminological research in diverse geographical settings to establish a globally focused research agenda and a newly emerging field of international criminology.
The project will build on the goals set out by the two teams at the roundtable held at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Criminology (ASC) in Philadelphia, sponsored by the ASC’s Division of International Criminology. At the ASC, the teams established that when exchanging information on the practicalities around and theoretical obstacles in doing criminological research across culturally distinct jurisdictions (i.e., USA and Slovenia, but also India, Jamaica, South Africa, and the United Kingdom), more fundamental questions around criminological knowledge-building in the Global North and South emerge. To rethink dominant criminological theories that are primarily Anglo-centric and examine their applicability to countries at the periphery of criminological knowledge, this project will combine international perceptual frameworks and academic narratives from across the Globe.
The project teams will engage in academic networking, meeting regularly and sharing their work at conferences, workshops, and meetings in Slovenia and the USA, most notably at the annual meetings of the ASC, The Society for the Study of Social Problems, The Law and Society Association, and the American Sociological Association. The teams aim for the meetings, special issue, and edited collection to become the foundation for further collaboration beyond the project’s duration and international research between the USA and Slovenia, as well as other jurisdictions, especially those underrepresented in academic scholarship within the field of criminology.
