Professor Aleš Završnik, Director of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, has been invited by the President of the American Society of Criminology (ASC) to participate as a speaker in a Presidential Panel at the Society’s 81st Annual Meeting, which will take place in Chicago, USA, from 18 to 21 November 2026.
Founded in 1941, the American Society of Criminology (ASC) is the world’s largest and most influential professional association in the field of criminology. It brings together approximately 3,500–4,500 members from more than 50 countries, while its annual meeting attracts over 4,000 researchers, academics, criminal justice professionals, and policymakers each year.
This year’s conference theme, “Criminology and Justice Policy,” will explore contemporary challenges facing criminological research and criminal justice systems. As part of the Presidential Panel entitled “Algorithmic Justice? The Use of Technology in Criminology and Justice Policy,” Professor Završnik will address the impact of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence on criminal justice systems, focusing on the challenges they pose to fundamental rights, fairness, and accountable governance.
His invitation to participate in this Presidential Panel represents an important recognition of Professor Završnik’s research and further highlights the international standing of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana in the fields of artificial intelligence, criminal justice, and the protection of fundamental rights.
