We kindly invite you to a lecture by dr. Olivera Simić entitled »Hague Tribunal: discussion on the detention and sentencing of Bilijana Plavšić«, which will take place as part of Tuesday Meetings on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, at 11.00 am in the library of the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Prof. Dr. Olivera Simić from Griffith University of Brisbane will present her recently published book Madam War Criminal: Biljana Plavšić, Serbia’s Iron Lady (Hurst Publishing) and will also talk about her work on prosecuting war criminals in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The book tells the surprising and shocking story of how Biljana Plavšić – once a respected scholar and dean at the University of Sarajevo – became the only female political leader to be convicted of mass atrocities. She was also the only woman among 161 defendants at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the first since Nuremberg to be convicted by an international court of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Professor Simić conducted hundreds of hours of interviews with Biljana Plavšić, who was released from a Swedish prison in 2009 and now lives in Belgrade.

Olivera Simić is a Professor with the Griffith Law School, Australia. Originally from the former Yugoslavia, Dr Simić lived through Yugoslav wars (1991-1999).Initially as a refugee and later as a migrant, Dr. Simic lived and studied in Eastern and Western Europe, the USA and South America before coming to Australia in 2006. She has published four monographs and numerous co-edited collections, book chapters, journal articles and personal narratives.
