At the Institute of Criminology, we have started a new European project CRIDE – The effectiveness of the suspected or accused of a crime persons right of defence (to be defended with the help of a professional lawyer). The project focuses on the right to have legal representation and the role of lawyers in ensuring fair trial guarantees, with a special emphasis on vulnerable suspects and defendants. Through comparative analyses, case studies, surveys, and interviews, we will explore the barriers to effective legal defence and develop criteria to improve its quality. The project is led by Vilnius University, with partners from Italy, Portugal, and Slovenia.
