Madam War Criminal: 30 Years of Dayton and the Legacy of Biljana Plavšić

2. December 2025, City Museum of Ljubljana, Gosposka ulica 15, 1000 Ljubljana

You are cordially invited to the event Madam War Criminal: 30 Years of Dayton and the Legacy of Biljana Plavšić, co-organized by the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, which will take place on Tuesday, 2 December 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the City Museum of Ljubljana.

At the event, Prof. Dr. Olivera Simić from Griffith University in Brisbane will present her recently published book Madam War Criminal: Biljana Plavšić, Serbia’s Iron Lady (Hurst Publishers) and will also speak about the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which is being commemorated this year.

The book explores the surprising yet disturbing story of how Biljana Plavšić—once a respected scientist and Dean at the University of Sarajevo—became the only female political leader convicted of mass atrocities.

She was also the only woman among 161 defendants before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the first since Nuremberg to be convicted by an international court of genocide and crimes against humanity.

As part of her research, Professor Simić conducted several hundred hours of interviews with Biljana Plavšić, who was released from a Swedish prison in 2009 and now resides in Belgrade.

The talk will be held in BHS (Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian).

Participation is free.

Prof. Dr. Renata Salecl, Institute of Criminology, Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana
