Helena Smrekar

Helena Smrekar is a researcher at the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana and a doctoral student in the criminology programme. She obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana. After completing her studies, she gained practical experience in the legal profession, working as a trainee lawyer and legal candidate, as well as a trainee judge. Her doctoral research focuses on the treatment of older convicted persons within the criminal justice system. At the Institute of Criminology, she is also involved in a research project examining the exercise of the right to defence by legal counsel in criminal proceedings, with particular attention to vulnerable groups and a comparative perspective across EU Member States.
