Two books by Dr Renata Salecl, a researcher at the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, have recently been published in new translations. A Passion for Ignorance has been translated into Italian, while Čas grobosti (The Time of Rudeness) has been translated into Turkish.
In A Passion for Ignorance, Salecl explores the role of ignorance in contemporary society, characterised by a constant flow of information and the growing prevalence of misinformation. Drawing on philosophy, psychoanalytic and social theory, as well as examples from everyday life, she examines how the knowledge economy has increasingly become an economy of ignorance and what this means for individuals and society.
Čas grobosti (The Time of Rudeness) examines the impact of neoliberalism and the ideal of constant productivity on individuals, who are encouraged to continually prove themselves, promote their achievements and pursue success. Salecl also highlights the broader social consequences of individualism, including the decline of politeness and social cohesion and the increasingly hostile nature of communication and behaviour.
