Our researcher Prof. Dr. Renata Salecl was a guest in the Spanish city of Oviedo, where the city presented its candidacy for the European Capital of Culture 2031 on 7 May. The organisers developed the central theme of the candidacy — Kindness (Amabilidá in the Asturian language) — drawing inspiration from Prof. Salecl’s book Čas grobosti, which was published in Spanish translation under the title Maleducados by the Argentine publishing house Godot in 2025.
Prof. Salecl spoke about the themes of the book and the broader issue of kindness at an event organised by the city of Oviedo on 7 May 2026 at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias on 9 May 2026 at the Feria del Libro de Oviedo book fair.
The presentation of Oviedo’s candidacy was accompanied by a large street parade involving around 2,500 schoolchildren, who demonstrated their support for the idea of kindness.
