Renata Salecl, a researcher at the Institute of Criminology at the Faculty of Law Ljubljana, was a guest on POPkast, where she talked about ignorance, its role in modern society, and why people sometimes consciously choose to avoid information.
As she explained, ignorance can also serve as a psychological mechanism that helps us cope with complex situations in which we feel that there is little we can do ourselves: “When situations are complex and we know that we cannot do much, closing our eyes can sometimes be a little helpful.”
The conversation also explored what left-wing populism means, why far-right parties are so successful in appealing to people’s emotions, and why algorithms tend to reward anger and rudeness.
