In her latest article, Dr Mojca M. Plesničar explores how political discourse and social media algorithms rely on restorative nostalgia—an idealised vision of the past that treats it not as a memory, but as a state to which society should return.

This form of nostalgia fosters the belief that society is in decline, that traditional values are under threat, and that the solution lies in restoring the “natural order.”

At the same time, the exploitation of these psychological mechanisms reinforces gender inequality, gradually reshapes societal attitudes towards women and gender relations, and lowers the threshold at which violence against women becomes normalised or justified.
