Researcher and Scientific Associate at the Institute of Criminology Dr Vasja Badalič has edited a monograph entitled The Rise of Illiberal Democracies, which offers a criminological reflection on the rise of illiberal politics in today’s world – an era marked by climate breakdown, permanent wars, and the erosion of democratic standards.
The monograph brings together contributions by Dr Kristina Čufar, Iva Ramuš Cvetkovič, Dr Nina Žnidaršič, Manja Skocir, Dr Renata Salecl, Dr Matjaž Jager, Dr Matjaž Ambrož, Živa Šketa, and Vasja Badalič.
The book provides, among other things, a critical analysis of the sometimes elusive boundary between liberal and illiberal systems, and examines how states, in the name of security, adopt methods of repression, censorship, and exclusion. This intersection is also evident in the response to the genocidal violence in Gaza, where international law and human rights have been pushed aside through propaganda and technologically enabled destruction.
