Crime fiction is one of the greatest paradoxes of modern culture. Its stories revolve around murder, violence, betrayal, and the darkest sides of human nature, yet for decades it has remained the world’s most widely read literary genre and one of the most popular categories of television entertainment.
“I believe crime fiction can also do a great deal of good,” explains Mojca Mihelj Plesničar. “Above all, it helps readers better understand ordinary people. It reminds us that even those who commit crimes may, in many cases, also be victims; that people and their roles are rarely simply black and white; and that every crime is driven by a complex set of motives.”
This is precisely why crime fiction continues to captivate audiences—not because of the violence it portrays, but because it offers a safe space to explore some of the deepest questions about human nature.
